The Legal Revolution Led by Dr. Mazeh – Child Support through an Egalitarian Approach
Until 2017, Israeli law required fathers alone to bear the financial costs of raising their children—even in cases of joint custody and even when the mother earned more. The prevailing claim was clear: the obligation to pay child support applied only to the father.
In 2017, a revolution occurred. The Supreme Court, in an expanded panel of seven justices, adopted the doctrine developed by Dr. Mazeh and ruled that child support obligations would henceforth be determined equally, according to the parents’ relative incomes and level of involvement in raising the children.

Leading the Reform that Revoked the Authority of Rabbinical Courts to Rule on Child Support
In a precedent-setting ruling, the High Court of Justice accepted the petition in which Dr. Yuval Mazeh, together with Attorney Shay Simchiov, represented the claim. The court ruled that rabbinical courts no longer have the authority to deliberate on child support.
The Legal and Social Impact: From now on, child support cases will be heard exclusively in civil courts—under an egalitarian, professional, and law-based approach. A significant step forward for thousands of parents whose children need fair and balanced decisions.
